Thanks, Sheri. We've found the air fare varies a lot to Guadalajara, but it's definitely cheaper than going to and from Hawaii.

Thanks! I would love to try France, too, because I speak French decently well and am familiar with the culture. But while you can find a few places where the cost of living is low enough, they're not the same places where the weather is good. :) Another French speaking location might be a possibility, but we haven't found one that meets all the criteria.

I am learning a lot of Spanish very quickly and I expect it's just a matter of time and a lot of patience before I break through the language barrier.

Regarding trying out your on-site VPN, I'd love to give it a whirl. We're here in Mexico for another 2 weeks so if you get it working by then, drop me an email. Thanks!

Hi Jak,
I am also an former Hawaii resident living on the Mainland and contemplating a life in Ajijic. At one point I found cheaper airfare to and from Guadalajara to Bradley airport in CT, than from Kansas City, where I now stay, to Bradley, It's worth investigating.

Way to go, Jak!

It's great that you are able to get good, fast internet service where you are. Our last trip to Mexico also taught me the value of VPN. I even went as far as to set up a spare computer at home just for that purpose. In our case it is Pandora that I need to access, but it's nice to have that added layer of security as well.

You have definitely inspired me to try something like this in the future. I've recently made the commitment to start writing on a regular basis again, and hope to parley that into some kind of income stream eventually. Moving out of the country is something I've always wanted to do. I'd prefer a French-speaking area, since like you, my Spanish is poor. I just need to find a country where the cost of living won't bankrupt me.

Also, I would be happy to set you up with access to my on-site VPN server at no cost, although I have had some issues with it lately. Once I get the bugs worked out I can send you a user name and password, if you'd like. Maybe you would be interested in being a beta tester? Good luck!

Thanks!

If we move here, one of the things we're going to budget in is a trip or two per year to see friends and family. When I lived in Hawaii, we didn't have the means to fly back to the mainland. I loved it there, but I really missed people.

I think you're smart to check this out. It takes courage to move away, particularly to an environment vastly different than you're used to. When I moved to Tanzania, I experienced a lot of the same "Must be connected!" anxiety, but it passes. I can't wait to read the rest of your reports! Good luck and enjoy yourself!

Thanks, Scott. Being aware is key, and what I wasn't conscious of until I starting tracking.
